Why is knowledge learned at universities useless at work for some people?

Some people say that they had to relearn everything when they get a job. Universities are supposed to provide most recent knowledge. But still many people have to relearn new knowledge.

Why is this happening?

The reason is that universities can only provide knowledge which is theories that have been proven.

If unproven, it cannot be knowledge and university cannot teach.

For example, when a company released a smartphone, it is proven to be working as smartphone which is knowledge.

University can teach the knowledge about the smartphone that is released (theorized).

If anything under development, university cannot teach because it is not proven to be working yet.

Companies strive by developing newer version.

However, students only learned proven knowledge that is the past.

And they rarely learn how to develop a new smartphone (new knowledge).

Thus, students have to learn ‘how to develop new knowledge’ when they get a job.

This is why some people think that they need to relearn everything again.

In fact, it is not the knowledge that they are relearning.

It is ‘learn to develop new knowledge’ that they are learning.

There are two ways to overcome this barrier.

1. Join a research team and do research - Research is a process of developing new knowledge. In this way, learners can learn the process of development of new knowledge.

2. Conceptualize knowledge – Conceptualization of knowledge is a process of building knowledge. Basically, you are simulating the process of making a theory (knowledge) using exiting knowledge. In case of smartphone, the process of building existing smartphone is the process of conceptualization of knowledge. This is called ‘learn how to learn’.

Among the two, the 2nd is the more effective for learning. Learning by research has its advantage such as experiments and hands on training. But topic could be limited.

On the other hand, conceptualization of knowledge can handle various topics within a given time frame.
